BENNINGTON – Playing without five starters, the Canton/Galva football team relied on youth to survive a full, four-quarter slugfest on the road at Bennington on Friday before winning 60-42.

Between the two teams, 137 offensive plays were ran covering 911 yards before the final second ticked off the clock.

“We escaped a tough game tonight with a hard-earned victory,” noted Eagle head coach Shelby Hoppes. “Playing short five starters tonight due to injuries, the best thing was that we got out of this game without any new injuries. That is the first game this season we have been able to say that.”

Canton/Galva is currently playing with five starters, including Nick Evans who most likely will miss the rest of the season due to a broken collarbone.

Coach Hoppes addressed the injuries by adding, “With Garrett (Maltbie), the ankle is getting a second opinion this next week while guys like Xavier (Westbrook) and Brayden (Doughman) are literally week-to-week, game-to-game on whether they will be able to play.”

As for the game with Bennington, it was the Tyson Struber and Jayden Ediger show on offense as Struber showed why he is an all-state player by rolling up 280 yards on offense with 208 coming on seven pass receptions while 72 came when he ran the ball nine times. Ediger completed 11-of-25 passes for 285 yards and five touchdowns while running for another 64 yards on 22 totes.

Of the eight scores made by Struber, four came on pass receptions of 50, 20, 37, and 72 yards while the four on the ground came from 12, 5, 5, and 40 yards out.

Cason Mastre scored the other touchdown on a 50-yard pass play from Ediger.

While the defense was kept busy with Bennington’s quarterback Ryker Greene as he threw for 277 yards while running for another 121 yards, totaling 398 of the teams 422 yards of offense.

Leading the defense was TJ Koehn who recorded 12 tackles, with nine being solo and three going for a loss of yardage. Tyson Struber and Lane McMannis each had 10 tackles with eight being solo stops, while Ryder Norstrom put nine tackles in the stat sheet with seven of those being solo. Preston Minson only showed four tackles in the game, but all four of them accounted for a loss of yardage.

With the season at the midway point of the regular schedule and the now 4-0 Eagles looking into the headlights of next week’s major matchup on the road with Little River, Coach Hoppes concluded his reflections after the game by saying, “Due to the injuries we are playing a lot of young kids, so we have to be patient with them when they make mistakes and work with them in fixing the mistakes as well. One thing we must do in the second half of the season is work on staying healthy.”
