LITTLE RIVER – Last Thursday, the Little River volleyball team got the best of visiting Ellsworth in a best-of-five dual, winning three of the first four sets.

After the Lady Redskins won set one 25-20, Ellsworth took set two 19-25 before the Lady Redskins handled business in sets three and four by winning 25-16, 25-19.

“It took four sets to do so, but it was good for our girls to play with a little adversity,” noted Lady Redskin head coach Kim Rolfs. “Ellsworth took away our power game and it took some settling down for our girls to adjust. I’m not sure how many blocks they had on us, but it was a bunch. Ellsworth did a great job exposing some of our weaknesses, but we had just enough grit to get it done.”

Some of the Little River stat leaders for the dual were Lily Boughfman with 18 kills and three blocks while Kamie Grasser went 22/23 on serves and Mea DeBaere served at 100% going 12/12. Alaina Eck recorded 10 kills and had two blocks while getting five aces on serves. Ashley Stephenson recorded four kills with one block, Aubrey Olander had six kills and four blocks, and Elsie Boughfman had five kills and a pair of blocks.

Coach Rolfs concluded her reflections on the dual by adding, “We had some key blocks of our own thanks to Aubrey (Olander), Ashley (Stephenson) and Elsie (Boughfman). Those three knew they needed to step up and help our defense by getting a touch on the hit. I have to say also, that to compensate for Ellsworth keying in on our big hitters, Lily (Boughfman) and Alaina (Eck), Ashley also had four kills on the night and each one were big ones.”

The Lady Redskin spikers were to have played at the Lyons Tournament on Saturday, September 25 before going on the road Tuesday for a dual with Canton/Galva.
