COLBY – The Smoky Valley Vikings lost for the first time in four games in 2021 on Friday when they went on the road out west to Colby and were beaten 39-14.
The Vikings put the first score on the board in the second quarter when Karson Pihl connected with Kade Blanchat for a 40-yard pass play into the end zone and with another Pihl pass to Ethan Able for the two-point conversion, Smoky Valley held and early 8-0 lead.
Unfortunately, Colby scored twice on runs later in the quarter and took a 16-8 advantage into the halftime break.
After Colby added another score in the third quarter, the Viking’s Karson Pihl threw another scoring pass, this time to Haven Lysell-Stewart that covered 15 yards early in the fourth quarter. After failing to score on the two-point conversion, the Vikings were back within 10 at 24-14. Colby did add two more touchdowns in the final quarter, one by the run and one on a pass play to earn the final 39-14 win over the Vikings.
Overall, the Smoky Valley offense continued to move the ball by picking up 285 yards on 46 plays with those yards well balanced between 129 through the air and 156 on the ground. What hampered the Viking offense was three turnovers on one fumble and two pass interceptions thrown by Pihl.
Kade Blanchat and Justice Autry led the Vikings offense by rushing for 73 and 68 yards respectively while Blanchat was the top pass catcher with another 71 yards on four receptions.
Defensively, the previously staunch Viking defense was nicked for 420 yards on 65 plays, including 318 on the ground as they could not find an answer to stopping Colby’s Tyler Voss who ran the ball 35 times for 240 yards and three of their scores.
Leading the Viking defense was Austin Sharp who recorded 10 tackles while Haven Lysell-Stewart had 8.5, Trystan Stambaugh had 8, Blanchat had 7, Ethan Able had 6 and Nolan Dauer recorded 5.
Now 3-1 on the season, next up for the Smoky Valley Vikings will be homecoming on Friday when they play host to Goodland.
