ELBING – Canton/Galva’s Christian Darrah continued to have an outstanding season running cross country as he placed 3rd and nearly broke the school record at the Berean Academy Invitational on Thursday run at Harvey County Lake East.

Darrah ran a 17:01 race which put him just two seconds off the Eagle school record while finishing 3rd and improving his time from a week ago by 12 seconds.

Morgan Becker, running for the first time since September 16 due to illness, ran an 18:27 and placed 19th.

“Christian (Darrah) as able to start well and ran in the second and third while staying with Andrew Harder of Berean Academy until the final mile when Harder was able to pull away by five seconds at the end,” explained Eagle cross country coach Lyle Silsby. “Sawyer Schmidt of Augusta won the race with a time of 15:34 as he outpaced the rest of the field. I talked with Morgan (Becker) before the race and decided to use this as a training run race and to run a tempo pace for most of the race, then try to finish strong, depending on how he felt at the end. He was able to outkick a runner from Sunrise Christian at the end and said he felt better than he has in a while, but still not back to normal.”

In the high school junior varsity boys race, the Eagles Garrett Silsby continued to improve as well as he finished with a run of 21:32 and placed 18th.

Speaking of Garrett, Coach Silsby added, “He knocked off 20 seconds from his performance last week. I think he could have run faster, but found himself leading a pack for a while, but was able to catch up to the runner closest in front of him, and was even able to pass him in the final quarter of a mile.”

Also running for Canton/Galva on Thursday was Cane Krase in the 7th grade 1,600 meter boys race. Krase finished 16th with a time of 8:10 which according to his coach was his fastest time of the season.

Next up for the Canton/Galva Eagle harriers will be Thursday, October 7 when they run at Burrton.
