LITTLE RIVER – In one of the more riveting games of the 2021 season, the battle between the past two 8-Man Division 1 champions, Canton/Galva and Little River proved to be just that – a battle royale with the Eagles coming up short in the end and losing 60-52.

It was a game that proved to be a true offensive slugfest as the second-ranked Eagles and top-ranked Redskins combined to overwork the scoreboard to the total 16 touchdowns and 112 points while rolling up a total of 1,156 yards in offense which included over 600 yards on the ground and another 530-plus yards through the air. All the offense output came despite the two teams also combining for 16 penalties causing a loss of 176 yards while turning the ball over four times each.

Both teams alternated scores in the first quarter with the Eagles getting on the board twice with a Garrett Maltbie 21-yard run and then a 24-yard pass from Maltbie to Cason Mastre. Unfortunately, Little River had the final say in the first quarter and took a 22-12 lead into the second stanza.

While Tyson Struber put the Eagles on the board again twice in the second quarter with scoring scampers of three and six yards, the Redskins added one in between the two and still held a short four-point advantage going into the halftime break.

Canton/Galva came out strong in the third quarter and scored twice on passes from Maltbie to Mastre for 29 yards and to Struber for 35 yards, giving the Eagles a short lived eight point, 38-30 lead before Little River managed to tie the game back up on a long scoring run late in the quarter.

When Little River appeared to put the game away with three quick fourth quarter scores to take a seemingly commanding 60-38 lead, the Eagles did not fold their tent and fought to the end by adding two more scores on Maltbie pass plays, one of 18 yards to Struber and the final score of the game on a seven-yard throw to Mastre.

Overall, the Eagles rolled up 605 yards of offense while running 75 plays thanks to the return to the lineup of quarterback Garrett Maltbie who appeared to back to health by tossing for 436 yards on 23 completions which included five touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

Tyson Struber and Cason Mastre were the two mainstays of Maltbie’s success as Struber made 11 catches covering 184 yards and Mastre had six receptions covering 136 yards.

Ryder Norstrom proved to be the workhorse running the ball for Canton/Galva as he carried 11 times for 95 yards.

Defensively, the Eagles were kept busy with Little River putting 546 yards of offense in the stat sheet, including 444 on the ground. Leading the Eagles D was Tyson Struber who racked up 11 tackles, including nine solo stops while Garrett Maltbie recorded 10 with eight solo and TJ Koehn had seven.

With the loss, Canton/Galva drops to 4-1 for the season as they return home for a tangle next Friday with Herington who will come into the game at 1-4 on the season after losing 34-24 to Lincoln on Friday evening.
