LINDSBORG – Bouncing back from their first loss on the season, the Smoky Valley football team handled Goodland at home and scored their fourth win of the 2021 season, 40-6.

After neither team scored in the first quarter, Trystan Stambaugh took to the end zone twice for the Vikings in the second quarter on scoring runs of 10 and 1 yard. Goodland added a short three-yard run for a score late in the quarter, but Smoky Valley still went into the halftime break holding a 10-point, 16-6 advantage.

Stambaugh scored twice more in the third quarter, running to the end zone from three and 47 yards as the Vikings opened their lead to 32-6 heading into the final 12 minutes of action.

Justice Autry jogged in from 12 yards out for the final Smoky Valley score in the fourth quarter, giving the Vikings their final 34-point, 40-6 win.

The Viking defense held Goodland to just a hair over three yards per offensive play as they only covered 153 yards on 48 offensive snaps while the Vikings piled up 326 yards on 54 offensive plays, including 277 yards on the ground. Both teams had issues with turnovers as the Vikings gave up three fumbles while Goodland had one fumble lost and threw three interceptions as Haven Lysell-Stewart, Kade Blanchat, and Austin Sharp all picked passes off for the Vikings.

Eighteen Vikings put tackle stats in the books for the game led by Stambaugh with 5.5 while Cody Krause, Lysell-Stewart, and Ethan Able each had four.

Offensively, the Vikings were led by their pounding running attack as Stambaugh ran for 136 yards on 20 carries while Justice Autry had 81 yards on 15 totes of the ball and Kade Blanchat carried eight times for 55 yards.

Now 4-1 on the season, the Vikings will next go on the road to play Scott City next Friday. Scott City will come into the game with a 3-2 record after losing to Russell 12-7 on Friday.
