BURRTON – For Canton/Galva senior cross-country runner Christian Darrah, the 2021 season continues to be a season of personal wonders when he not only won the meet at Burrton on Thursday, but he also broke a school record.

Darrah took off from the start of the race in Burrton and never looked back, leading from the beginning to the end while knocking off 27 seconds from the former school record previously held by fellow senior Eagle harrier Morgan Becker, and running the 5K in 16:15.

“It was a great day to be an Eagle at the Burrton Cross Country Meet for our senior Christian Darrah,” explained Canton/Galva head coach Lyle Silsby. “He was able to win the race in a time of 16:15, which broke the former school record held by teammate Morgan Becker. Christian has been running well all season and has been able to improve a little each week which has been fun to watch. He’s a great kid, and I am so happy for him to do as well as he is.”

The former Canton/Galva record holder, Morgan Becker, continued to work toward getting back to running shape after missing a couple of weeks due to an illness and managed to run his race at Burrton in 17:07 which was good for a third-place finish.

Coach Silsby was pleased to see Becker return to form during his post-meet reflections, noting, “Morgan (Becker) was able to return to racing action while feeling fairly good at the same time. His third-place finish turned out to be just seven seconds off his personal best time. While he is still not 100%, it is encouraging to see him run again and not feel just terrible the whole time. I can only wonder what times he would be running had he been feeling good the whole season. Morgan is tough as nails, physically and mentally, and is doing everything he can to get back to as close to normal before we get to regionals.”

The only other Eagle harriers running at Burrton were Garrett Silsby who ran in the junior varsity race and finished in seventh place with a time of 20:50 while Cane Krase placed sixth in the 7th grade boys 2-mile race with a time of 16:31.

Coach Silsby concluded his reflections by saying, “Garrett (Silsby) keeps getting better each week also as he ran a personal best time at Burrton. It has been great for him to be able to run with the two senior boys and learn each day from their examples. Our youngster, Cane (Krase) has improved a lot from his one other two-mile race two weeks ago. His improvement knocked three minutes from his previous time.”

Next up for the short numbered but high-powered Eagle cross country team will be a return trip to Burrton on Thursday, October 14 for the Wheat State League meet.
