VALLEY CENTER – On Thursday the McPherson Middle School 8th grade volleyball team traveled to Valley Center and took two straight set matches from Valley Center and Maize South.

The McPherson 7th grade volleyball team was scheduled to play in Maize, but those games were cancelled due to water issues.

For the 8th grade Junior Lady Pups, the ‘A’ team scored a straight set (25-18, 25-17) win over host Valley Center before handing Maize South a similar defeat in straight sets (25-15, 25-13).

“We had a rocky start to our games today with too many missed serves and unforced errors,” noted Junior Lady Pup head coach Abby Bradstreet. “However, we were able to settle down and play much better after the first set and ended up coming away with two wins. We had some great plays at the net with Ava Romero earning four blocks for the day. Our communication was excellent, and we really showed some great hustle on the court. We do need to clean up some of our rotations and make sure we are playing with intensity  from start to finish.”

In the 8th grade Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ games, McPherson lost in straight sets to both Valley Center (14-25, 20-25) and Maize South (11-25, 22-25).

According to ‘B’ team coach Chelsey McCasland, “The ‘B’ team has had tough matchups as we near the end of the season and tonight we just couldn’t get the job done. After looking at our stats, I feel that we beat ourselves with missed serves, dropped balls, and being unable to finish the play. Our passing and hitting was a little inconsistent tonight and we really struggled to find a rhythm. A bright spot in the evening is that our second set has consistently been closer that our first set but we need to find a way to get fired up to start the matches, so we don’t have to play catch up because that doesn’t work against tough competition.”

The McPherson Middle School 8th grade Junior Lady Pup spikers will now finish out the regular season on Monday with a matchup on the road at Derby.
