LINDSBORG – Everything about Friday night’s game in Lindsborg was close, even on the scoreboard, unfortunately the Smoky Valley team came up short on the board that counted and lost 21-14 to visiting Scott City.

The loss drops the Vikings to 4-2 on the season.

Scott City got on the board first in the first quarter on a seven-yard run to take an early 7-0 lead.

The Vikings Karson Pihl found Kade Blanchat from 14-yards out to get an early score in the second quarter and pull ahead at 8-7 after Pihl ran in the two-point conversion.

Midway through the quarter, Scott City drove down and scored again to take a 14-8 advantage over the Vikings into the halftime break.

With just a bit under five minutes left in the third quarter, Smoky Valley drove down and gave the ball to Justice Autry who plunged in from two yards out to tie the game up at 14-14. Twenty seconds later, Scott City broke loose for a 62-yard dash for the final score of the game, giving them the final 21-14 victory as neither team was able to find the end zone in the fourth quarter.

The game was close all the way around as only three yards separated the two teams in total offense with Smoky Valley gaining 316 yards on 64 snaps of the ball while Scott City gained 313 on 53 offensive plays.

Scott City gained most of their yardage on the ground as they ran for 260 yards on 40 totes while the Vikings had a more balanced attack as Karson Pihl completed 10-of-25 passes for 128 yards and the runners combined for 188 yards. Unfortunately, Pihl did throw a pair of costly interceptions.

Justice Autry ran for 117 yards on 18 carries to lead the Vikings running attack while Trystan Stambaugh covered 67 yards on 18 totes of the ball. Haven Lysell-Stewart was Pihl favorite receiver as he caught four passes for 61 yards.

Leading the Smoky Valley defense was Ethan Able with eight tackles while Austin Sharp recorded six-and-a-half and Nolan Dauer had six.

The loss drops the Vikings to 4-2 on the season as they now prep for a tough home game next Friday when the number-two ranked team in Class 3A, Southeast of Saline, comes to town with a glittering 6-0 record and fresh off a 53-0 hammering of Goodland on Friday.
