The Smoky Valley Middle School cross country team closed out their 2021 season with a run on Thursday where nine individual runners finished in the top-ten of their division.
Coming in the top finish of the day was Sophia Eyer who placed third in the seventh-grade girls division while Emma Chaput finished ninth.
For the eighth-grade Junior Lady Vikings, all three runners placed in the top seven with Gracie Peterson finishing fifth, Mila Sims placing sixth and Emma Hauck finishing seventh.
Top runner for the Junior Viking boys was Parker Gardner who placed fourth in the two-mile run for the eighth-grade boys division while Kaden Bishop placed seventh.
Two of the seven Junior Viking boys running in the seventh-grade boys division placed in the top-ten with those being Ayden Reyes in fifth and Christian Ericson who placed ninth.
“They are middle school kids so there will be those times when you have a knack of getting on the nerves of the older folks,” noted cross country coach Jay Myers. “So, shout out to them today on several levels because with a couple of exceptions, I loved watching them run today and one or more of the couple of exceptions just may have been people not feeling very well. It happens, so they may have been trying their best under the circumstances and that is always something we accept.”
Coach Myers concluded his reflections by adding, “I am always proud of people willing to try something and being willing to put in some effort on such, especially when they are willing to try maybe just a little bit harder than they thought they could. I think all our seventh and eighth grade grew a lot while getting better and we are proud of them for doing as this sport of cross country certainly is one of the tougher ones just for the challenge it gives your body and mind. I appreciate their efforts and hope they will decide to continue and that most will decide they want to be good at it. They certainly can be, but it will take some offseason efforts.”
