STAFFORD – Stafford obliged the Canton/Galva football team to come to their town and play a game on a date the Eagles had no one on the schedule, they may regret that choice as Canton/Galva buried the home team 62-6 on Friday night.

The Eagle defense showed up early as TJ Koehn took advantage of a Stafford fumble caused by Wyatt Collins and returned it for the first score of the game. Garrett Maltbie plunged in for the two-point conversion and the Eagles were up early 8-0.

It was all Canton/Galva the rest of the quarter as Ryder Norstrom scored on a six-yard run before Maltbie connected with TJ Koehn and Tyson Struber for scoring passes covering 59 and 39 yards, respectively. Three more two-point conversions by Maltbie, Norstrom and Struber gave the Eagles a commanding 32-0 advantage at the end of the first twelve minutes of play.

Norstrom ran through the Stafford defense early in the second quarter to score from 47 yards out before Maltbie scampered in from 33 yards out to give Canton/Galva a 48-0 lead midway through the quarter.

Stafford made their one big play of the game when they returned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards for a score, but the Eagles came back with two more touchdowns in the final five minutes of the half on a 21-yard pass from Maltbie to Xavier Westbrook and a short four-yard dash from Norstrom, giving the Eagles the 62-6 advantage and enough points to point rule Stafford at halftime.

For the game Canton/Galva’s defense held Stafford to a measly 45 yards on 29 offensive plays, just 1.6 yards per snap. They also forced the one fumble plus an interception by Lane McMannis.

Tyson Struber and Ryder Norstrom led the defense with eight and five tackles each as the Eagles took Stafford runners down for a loss of yardage six times in the game.

On offense, Garrett Maltbie completed six of his nine pass attempts which were good for 160 yards and the three touchdowns while also running for another 50 yards on six carries and a score. Ryder Norstrom led the team in rushing with 82 yards on 10 carries while scoring three times.

With the win, the Eagles are now 5-1 on the season and finish the regular season with a home game against Lincoln next Friday. Lincoln will come into the game 3-3 after losing to Bennington on Friday 46-22.
