GYPSUM – The Smoky Valley football team took to the road on Friday tangle with unbeaten Southeast of Saline, a team that had only given up twelve points all season. The result of the road trip was not pretty for the Vikings as they lost 45-0.
After holding the Trojans to zero points in the first quarter, the home team scored twice in the second and four times in the third to gain their 45-0 win.
Smoky Valley was only able to muster 118 yards in total offense on the evening with fifty snaps on offense. Karson Pihl had a rough night at quarterback for the Vikings as he completed just four of eleven passes for thirty-five yards and threw one interception. Haven Lysell-Stewart accounted for three of Pihl’s completed passes, covering thirty-three yards.
While the Vikings have normally been able to run the ball with some force this season, this night they were not as they only gained eighty-three yards on thirty-nine carries led by Trystan Stambaugh and Kade Blanchat with 39 and 34 yards, respectively.
Southeast of Saline unleashed a passing attack on the Vikings that saw Trojan quarterback Luke Gebhart complete a whopping 26 of 30 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Gebhart also ran the ball thirteen times for sixty-one yards and a pair of touchdowns. Gebhart’s favorite receiver was Jake Gebhart who caught thirteen passes for 132 yards and one score.
The Trojans also ran for 167 yards on thirty totes with Matthew Rodriguez just missing the 100-yard mark with ninety-eight yards on fourteen carries good for two scores.
Leading the Smoky Valley defense were Haven Lysell-Stewart and Nolan Dauer who each recorded seven tackles while Kade Blanchat and Max Bieker had six-and-a-half stops each and Ethan Able made six. Fifteen different Vikings recorded a tackle in the stat sheets during the game.
The loss drops the Vikings to 4-3 on the season after starting out 3-0. Smoky Valley will now close out the regular season schedule next Friday by hosting Russell who is also 4-3 on the season after losing to Goodland 16-14 on Friday.
