LITTLE RIVER – For one of the few times in a couple of seasons, the Little River football trailed at the end of the first quarter and were tied at halftime before pulling away in the fourth quarter to score a 42-26 victory over the visiting Burlingame Bearcats on Friday.

With the win, the Redskins claimed the Regional Championship of the 8-Man Division I playoffs as they continue their march toward what they hope will be a second-straight state championship.

The win moves the Redskins record to 10-0 on the season as they now prep for Sectional play on the road next Friday at Madison. Madison will come into the game 10-0 as well after they hammered Howard/West Elk on Friday 56-6.

For Little River, Burlingame jumped out to a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter after scoring on a short four-yard run and a lengthy 60-yard punt return.

Bouncing back in the second quarter, the Redskins scored three straight times thanks to two scoring runs of one and fifty-six yards by Braden Young before he returned a punt eighty yards for yet a third touchdown, giving the lead back to Little River at 20-14. The Bearcats though marched down and scored late in the quarter on a seven-yard run to tie the game up at 20-20 going into the halftime break.

Redskin quarterback Rylan Konen connected with Braxton Lafferty for a 23-yard scoring pass play and then added a two-point conversion to retake the lead 28-20 early in the third quarter.

The Bearcats would not go away though as they once again marched down the field and put another score on the board on a short, one-yard plunge into the end zone to pull back within two points at 28-26 heading into the final twelve minutes of play.

Little River took control of the game in the final quarter, shutting down the Burlingame offense while putting two more scores on the board themselves on a two-yard run by Lafferty and an eight-yard scamper by Konen, giving the Redskins the final victory of 42-26.

The Redskins defense held Burlingame to less than four yards per offensive play as the Bearcats gained but 191 yards on fifty-five snaps while Little River put 356 yards of offense in the stat book on fifty-nine offensive plays or just a bit over 6.0 yards per snap.

Rylan Konen led the Redskin defense with six tackles, including five solo stops while Braxton Lafferty and Kaden Schafer had five and four solo stops, respectively.

On offense, the Redskins ran forty-two running plays for 202 yards while Rylan Konen completed nine-of-thirteen passes for 154 yards. Konen also led the team in rushing with seventy-eight yards on twenty-one carries while Braxton Lafferty covered sixty-seven yards on fourteen totes and Braden Young had fifty-four yards on just four carries. Young was Konen favorite receiver on the night as he pulled in five passes for eighty-nine yards.
