The Canton/Galva football team went on the road Friday and after struggling to put away Clifton/Clyde in the first half, the Eagles outscored the home team 28-0 in the second half to earn an 8-Man Division I Regional Championship victory 66-20.
With the win, the Eagles now sport a 9-1 mark on the season with the lone loss being to top-ranked and defending state champion Little River. The Eagles will be back at home next Friday for their sectional game of the state playoffs where they will host Sedan. Sedan will bring an unbeaten, 10-0 mark to town after defeating Chase County 34-26 on Friday.
If Canton/Galva gets past Sedan next Friday, they could be looking at a rematch with Little River if the Redskins can defeat unbeaten Madison next week as well.
The two teams traded scores in the first quarter with Xavier Westbrook taking a 14-yard pass from Garrett Maltbie into the end zone for the Eagles first score of the contest. Clifton/Clyde came back with a long drive and a score before Canton/Galva added a second touchdown in the first stanza on a one-yard plunge into the end zone by Garrett Maltbie.
After Clifton/Clyde scored again, the Eagles closed out the first quarter scoring blitz with a 41-yard scoring pass play from Maltbie to all-stater Tyson Struber, giving the Eagles a 24-12 advantage.
Maltbie scored again on another one yard run early in the second quarter and after the home team put up their final score in the game on the board, the Eagles came back with another scoring pass play from Maltbie to Struber, this time from ten yards out to give Canton/Galva a 38-20 lead going into the halftime break.
It was all Eagles in the second half as they put three scores on the board in the third quarter on five and forty yard runs from Struber and Maltbie along with an 18-yard pass from Maltbie to Struber to give Canton/Galva a commanding 60-20 advantage.
Canton/Galva closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter on another run from one yard run by Maltbie to give them the final 66-20 win and regional championship.
The Eagles ran thirty-nine offensive plays for 452 yards which was good for 11.6 yards per offensive snap.
Maltbie had a huge night throwing the ball for the Eagles as he completed nine-of-eleven for 193 yards and four touchdowns with Struber on the receiving end of eight for 179 yards.
The top rusher for the Eagles was also Maltbie as he ran for 153 yards on eighteen carries as he ended up with 346 yards in offense and eight touchdowns for the night. Ryder Norstrom nearly broke the 100-yard mark as well as he ran for ninety-two yards on just seven carries.
Defensively, the Eagles held Clifton/Clyde to just 190 yards on fifty-two plays or just 3.7 yards per snap on offense. Struber led the Canton/Galva defense as he recorded eight tackles while Lane McMannis had seven-and-a-half and both TJ Koehn and Ryder Norstrom each had seven. The Eagles tackled Clifton/Clyde six times for a loss of yardage.
