MULVANE – In a game marred by penalties and a near late game comeback, the McPherson football team closed out their 2021 season on Friday on the road with a two-point, 18-16 loss to Mulvane in the Class 4A regional playoff game.
It was the second loss in less than a month to Mulvane as the Wildcats came into McPherson back in mid-October and scored a 22-12 win over the Bullpups as well.
With the loss, McPherson closed the 2021 season at 7-3.
In Friday’s game, the Bullpups and Wildcats were their own worst enemy as the two teams combined for seventeen penalties for loss of 185 yards with McPherson getting eleven yellow flags on them for 120 yards.
Mulvane scored in each of the first two quarters on runs by their all-state quarterback and future North Dakota State Bison, Mason Ellis to take a slim 12-0 advantage into the halftime break.
After neither team was able to find the end zone in the third quarter, Mulvane seemed to put the game away in the early fourth quarter on a scoring pass from Ellis to Ian Comer to give the Wildcats an 18-0 lead.
But the Bullpups were not done yet as they suddenly found life in their offense in the back half of the fourth quarter as they scored sixteen points in just over a minute on a 37-yard pass from Hunter Alvord to Trey Buckbee before Jaytin Gumm topped off a quick scoring drive with a score from one-yard out after the Wildcats coughed up the ball on a fumble. With two Alvord to Seth Madron two-point conversion plays, McPherson was back to within two points.
Unfortunately, the on sides kickoff did not bounce the way of the Bullpups and the season ended.
Considering McPherson had nine more offensive plays (62-53) and out gained the Wildcats 269-204, one could see where the substantial number of penalties and a missed field goal by Aiden Hoover just before the halftime break played a huge part in ending the season for the Bullpups.
For the Bullpups, Hunter Alvord, just a junior, finished the game completing 16-of-32 passes for 198 yards with junior Tucker Pelnar on the receiving end of five, good for fifty-six yards while seniors Trey Buckbee and Seth Madron combined for six receptions and eighty yards.
Jaytin Gumm closed out his junior Bullpup season just missing 100-yard game as he covered ninety yards on fifteen carries to lead the running attack.
