MCPHERSON = The McPherson Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball teams have opened their 2021-22 season by getting three wins out of four games in their first week of play.
Here is a summary of the games:
The upcoming week will see the 7th grade Junior Lady Pups will be hosting Newton Chisholm Middle School on Monday before traveling to Salina South on Thursday.
THURSDAY – at Derby
After opening the season with a pair of wins on Monday, the 7th grade Junior Lady Pups returned to the hardwood on Thursday with a road trip to Derby where the ‘A’ team scored a decisive 50-13 victory while the ‘B’ team lost 28-22.
According to the 7th grade Junior Lady Pups head coach Kennedy Elliott, “Our teams struggled with numbers and fouling, but they did play aggressively. Our ‘A’ team did a great job attacking the basket which forced Derby into a zone defense for the second half of the game. We adjusted and still managed to hit several open three-pointers while finding openings in the paint.”
‘A’ TEAM SCORING = Malia Hoppes 14; Jaela Thompson 13; Rylie Whitfield 8; Piper Alvord 6; Brynn Littlejohn 5; Amara Dossett 2; Carmin Pavlovich 2.
‘B’ TEAM SCORING = Molly Owen 17; Ari Prose 5.
MONDAY – at Salina Lakewood
The seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups opened their season on Monday with a road game at Salina Lakewood where they came home with two solid wins.
The ‘A’ team dominated their opponent with a 45-10 victory while the ‘B’ team out fought Salina Lakewood to gain a 27-17 win.
“Our team is an athletic group,” noted head coach Kennedy Elliott. “We started our game off relying on our athleticism, but as we moved forward the girls also managed to execute plays and make smart countermoves as well. A couple of highlights came from our play execution when Jaela Thompson hit an open three-pointer as well as a nice backdoor cut that resulted in a score-and-one by Rylie Whitfield. Overall it was a great game won by some great girls.”
No individual scoring was available for the games at Salina Lakewood.
