CANTON – Just like it was on October 1, the Canton/Galva Eagles found themselves in an offensive slugfest on Friday at the state semifinals for 8-Man Division I and they found themselves once again on the losing end with Little River outscoring the Eagles 76-68.

With the loss, the Eagles close out the 2021 season at 10-2 with both losses being too Little River.

Little River will now take their 12-0 mark into the state championship game as they look to repeat as state champions. They will tangle with Meade who is also unbeaten at 12-0 after beating Hill City 48-34 on Friday.

For the Eagle-Redskin game on Friday, they combined for 146 points while totaling 1,192 yards in total offense on 129 offensive plays. The game was scary similar to the previous matchup when the two teams combined for 112 points (score was 60-52 in favor of Little River), and 1,150 total yards in offense on 130 plays.

On Friday night, Canton/Galva jumped out early and gained a 16-6 lead by the end of the first quarter on a 65-yard scoring run by quarterback Garrett Maltbie and a 46-yard scoring pass play from Maltbie to Tyson Struber.

The Eagles added two more scores in the second quarter as Maltbie connected with Cason Mastre and Struber for scoring pass plays covering 35 and 29 yards, respectively. While Little River managed to put three scores on the board in the quarter, the Eagles managed to hang on for a 32-26 lead heading into the halftime break. The advantage coming from Canton/Galva converting all four of their two-point conversions while the Redskins only managed to convert one of four.

While both teams seemingly took a break from scoring in the third quarter, the Eagles did put two more on the board on a 63-yard pass play from Maltbie to Struber and a 12-yard scramble to the end zone by Maltbie. Little River put one score on the board and converted their two-point conversion, giving the Eagles a 12-point, 46-34 advantage heading into the final twelve minutes of play.

The Redskins went on a scoring bonanza in the final quarter as they put six touchdowns on the board and converted three of the six two-point conversions. Canton/Galva was able to score three times as Maltbie three two more scoring passes from Maltbie to TJ Koehn covering forty-eight yards and Cason Mastre for sixteen before running in for another score himself, but still fell short in the end and lost 76-68 to end their 2021 season.

Offensively, the Eagles totaled sixty-nine yards on sixty-one plays with Maltbie accounting for 547 of those as he ran for 128 yards on thirteen carries while throwing thirty-seven passes and completing twenty-three for another 419 yards.

Future K-State Wildcat Struber was Maltbie’s favorite target as he pulled in fourteen passes covering 268 yards while Mastre covered ninety-three yards on seven receptions.

Struber was a workhorse on defense as he recorded whopping fifteen tackles, including eleven solo stops. Ryder Norstrom chipped in with 8.5 stops while both Lane McMannis and TJ Koehn each recorded eight tackles.
