MOUNDRIDGE = Going down 13-0 off the opening tip put the young Elyria Eagles in a corner they could not get out off and ended up losing their opening game of the season by 19, 49-30 on the road at Moundridge.

The Wildcats jumped out early and scored the first thirteen points of the game before the Eagles began to right the offensive ship a bit and pull to within six, 17-11 by the end of the first quarter. Moundridge doubled up the Eagles on the scoreboard in the second stanza, 14-7 to take a 31-18 advantage into the halftime break.

“It’s always great to open the season with a team who will challenge you and expose your weaknesses going forward,” noted Eagle head coach Zach Goodrich. “We knew what we were going to get with a seasoned, disciplined Moundridge team and I thought we came out a little scared and flat which put us down 13 points right out of the gate which is always hard to recover from.”

Of course, it did not help that the Wildcats had a three-headed monster scoring as Landon Kaufman, Logan Churchill, and Joseph Lane accounted for forty-five of the team’s forty-nine points with Kaufman dropping in eighteen and Churchill getting fifteen.

The Eagles did connect on just 31% (11/36) of their shots from the field and just 33% (3/9) from the charity strip while the Wildcats hit 49% and 100% from the same.

Johnny Unruh led the Elyria offense with seven points while both Ty Romero and Josh Allen each scored six and Ben Unruh hit for five.

While no single Eagle had more than four rebounds, ten different players recorded at least one rebound pulled down in their stat sheet.

Coach Goodrich continued his post-game reflections by adding, “There were some bright spots that we can build on moving forward. I thought some of our guards had tremendous on play on ball defensively and competed well. We are noticeably young and inexperienced so it may take some time for our guys to figure out their roles and how to compete on both sides of the ball for an entire game.”
