MOUNDRIDGE – Playing without their team’s leading scorer, the Moundridge boys leaned on Logan Churchill to step up and gain a 10-point, 48-38, home court win over Little River on Tuesday.
The Wildcats took a small, three-point advantage at 13-10 over the Redskins at the end of the first quarter and pushed it out to a nine-point 30-21 lead heading into the halftime break.
Neither team could muster much offense in the third quarter as they totaled just 11 points between them and both teams scored twelve in the fourth to give the Wildcats the final 10-point victory.
“We played a little short-handed tonight but the kids stepped up and helped us get the win against an athletic and well coach Little River squad,” noted Wildcat head coach Vance Unrau in his post-game reflections. “I know that they were missing some kids as well so it would be nice to play at full strength for both teams. We shared the ball well and got possessions in the paint where we could take advantage of our size.”
Moundridge out shot Little River 57% to 39% from the field and made six more free throws along with grabbing nine more rebounds in the game.
With top scorer Landon Kaufman not available, Logan Churchill stepped up big time and recorded a double double by scoring 25 points and leading the team with 10 rebounds. Joseph Schrag also hit for double digits with 13 points thanks to connecting on a team high four three-pointers, while Henry Hecox chipped in with eight points while directing the offense and dishing out eight assists.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE WILDCATS?
The win gives the Wildcats a 3-2 mark for the season as they prep for the Heart of America League/Central Plains League Challenge game on Friday when they host Garden Plain.
