INMAN – It was a tale of two games on Tuesday as the Inman boys and girls hosted Sterling and while the girls continued to struggle to get their first win of the season and lost 68-39 while the Teuton boys survived a battle and earned a 51-46 home court overtime win.
The Lady Teutons put 13 points on the board in the first quarter only to see Sterling put 23 points on the board and take an early 10-point lead. After putting another 23 points in the scorebook in the second quarter while holding Inman to just four, Sterling took a commanding 46-17 advantage into the halftime break before cruising in the second half to gain the final 29-point victory.
Only seven field goals were made by the Lady Teutons, led by 18 points from Maci Neufeld, much thanks to her three three-pointers while Kambrey Woods also reached double digits with 10.
It was a barn burner for the Teuton boys as Sterling pushed them into overtime before the home team could celebrate the final five-point, 51-46 victory.
The Teutons trailed by six, 14-8, at the end of the first quarter before bouncing back to take a one-point, 24-23, lead into the halftime break. Inman then came out and pushed their lead to five, 38-33, by the end of the third after which Sterling pushed back and tied the game at 46-46 when the final whistle blew.
The Teutons then shutout the visitors 5-0 in the overtime to get the hard-earned win.
“I thought Sterling played really well as they were physical and challenged us on our drives,” explained Teuton head coach Brett Froese. “It took us a little bit to respond to that and it shouldn’t have.”
Jace Doerksen led the Teutons with 15 points while Tanner Heckel chipped in with 10 and Zach Martisko had eight.
Teuton coach Froese concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “I was proud of our effort as we had some kids make some big plays down the stretch for us. I though our two posts, (Dawson) Mannebach and (Zach) Martisko were exceptionally good for us tonight. It wasn’t always pretty from us tonight on either end of the court, but we made plays when we had to.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR TEUTON TEAMS?
The Teuton boys are now 4-1 for the season and will host Cheney on Friday while the Lady Teutons are still looking for their first win of the season at 0-5 as they prep for a road trip to Belle Plaine on Thursday.
