WINFIELD – It just was the way it should be between two long time wrestling rivals as the McPherson Bullpup boys went to the final match of the day before gaining victory over Winfield, 37-33, on the road Thursday.

Considering the fact that the Bullpups gave up 12 points automatically at the beginning because they had to forfeit at 106 and 113 pounds, they still managed to come through and pull out the late win for a victory.

Conner McVicker, wrestling at heavyweight, had to win with a pin for McPherson to take home a team victory and he did just that, pinning his opponent at 3:10 into the match.

“Exciting dual it was,” declared Bullpup head coach Doug Kretzer in some post-meet reflections. “Both teams had kids step up to swing the match back and forth. Collin Pearson had a big pin when we needed to get the momentum going our way while both Jase Fitzmorris and Caden Burris in their losses had a significant impact on the overall match by fighting off pins late in their matches, reducing the points Winfield received. If either of them were to be pinned, we as a team could not mathematically win. It was a total team effort, and I am immensely proud of all the kids.”

Beyond Joseph Nutt and McVicker getting pins to win the meet for the Bullpups, other victories by pins were recorded by Treyton Pelnar and Hayden Farley while Lorenzo Cruzen won his match on points and Brock Richardson won by forfeit.

The Lady Bullpups also scored a team victory, 48-24, beating a Vikings team that presented more wrestlers than expected.

Every match on the ladies side ended in pins with the Lady Bullpups getting victories from Braelynn Patterson, Hunter Wilson (who won twice), Destanie Spear, Erin Kutina, Nadia Vesser, and Eliana Rush.

Coach Kretzer concluded his post-meet reflections by adding, “On our girls side, Hunter Wilson is wrestling really well right now as she had two wins on the night. They ran the girls matches in a dual format and we had nice wins from Nadia Vesser, Braelynn Patterson, Destanie Spear, Erin Kutina, and Eliana Rush.”

All the Bullpup wrestlers will now be competing at Abilene with the Lady Bullpups and the Bullpup boys junior varsity wrestling on Friday while the varsity boys will be on the mat on Saturday.
