ELYRIA – As well as the Elyria Christian girls played on Monday, Sedgwick shot just enough better to earn a three-point, 47-44 victory over the Lady Eagles at Elyria.
“This was a great game for our girls to be a part of tonight,” pointed out Lady Eagle head coach Greg Fields. “Sedgwick recently go all their starters back from sickness and they were definitely ready to play. They did a remarkable job shooting from the outside, and we just didn’t do a good enough job getting out on them to pressure those shots.”
After both teams put 10 points on the board in the first quarter, Sedgwick pulled out to a five-point, 22-17 advantage heading into the halftime break before the Lady Eagles pulled back to within two at 32-30 by the end of the third quarter.
The Elyria girls shot a solid 43% from the field for the game, but hit just 28% of their three-point attempts while Sedgwick connected on 48% of their total field goals and a blistering 55% from past the arc, making 11 three-pointers in the game.
Kylee Penner led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 24 points though Ryland Hawkinson scored a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Coach Fields concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “We needed to be pushed, and as disappointed as I was at times with our defense, I was pleased with the ball movement and the more productive offensive night to give us a chance to get a win at the end of the game. We came up short, but I was happy with the effort, especially in the last couple of minutes. Ryland (Hawkinson) played hard tonight and it showed up with recording a double double as she really played it tough around the basket.”
