FAIRFIELD – The Little River girls continued to have a strong season as they closed out the Fairfield Invitational Tournament on Friday with a resounding 20-point, 68-48 victory over Burrton to bring home the tournament championship trophy.
Lady Redskin Lily Boughfman was named the most valuable player of the tournament while she was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Alaina Eck and Aubrey Olander. Eck also finished second in the three-point shooting competition.
Now 12-1 for the season and ranked #4 in Class 1A Division I, the Lady Redskins will take to the road on Tuesday to Solomon before closing out the first week of February with a home game on Friday against Canton/Galva.
It was a struggle at the beginning of the game for Little River as they trailed Burrton by five, 16-11 heading into the second quarter when the Lady Redskin defense held Burrton to just seven points while landing 22 points of offense in the scorebook themselves to bounce back and take a 10-point, 33-23, lead into the halftime break.
The Lady Redskins pushed their advantage out to 16 points, 56-40 by the end of the third quarter before settling in for the final 20-point win.
Little River shot a solid 45% from the field while dishing out 17 assists, grabbing a total of 38 rebounds, making 12 steals, and blocking a total of seven shots.
Lily Boughfman had a career night scoring with 29 points while Aubrey Olander hit for 14 and both Alaina Eck and Elsie Boughfman just missed double digits with nine and seven points each.
Not only did Lily Boughfman lead the team in scoring, but she also topped the stat sheet in rebounds with eight and assists with five while also recording a pair of steals and a pair of blocked shots.
“Lily (Boughfman) had her career best scoring night with 29,” pointed out Lady Redskin head coach Brent Clark. “I thought we struggled defensively early, and I give credit to the Burrton coach and his girls as they battled extremely hard in this game. Our overall size got to them as our two post players combined for 43 of our 68 points.”
