LITTLE RIVER = Going up against the #4 team in the state with a small roster, the Canton/Galva girls knew it was going to be tough and Little River proved exactly that on Friday as they hosted the Lady Eagles and took them to task with a 50-point, 64-14 hammering.
“I thought the girls fought hard for me and didn’t give up,” noted Lady Eagle head coach Brad Crump. “I told them to compete tonight and leave it all on the floor and I feel like they left it all out on the floor.”
The Lady Redskins raced out to a 25-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and after the Lady Eagles found some offense in the second quarter, only held a 24-point, 35-11 advantage at the halftime break. Coming out of the intermission, Canton/Galva went ice cold in the third quarter and did get a single point while Little River added 22 to their total from which they then cruised in for the final 50-point win.
Coach Crump finished his post-game reflections by saying, “Little River is a heck of a team as they have depth, their guards are talented, and the bigs can shoot anywhere on the floor.”
While no team stats were available for the Lady Eagles, the Lady Redskins recorded 21 assists on 29 made shots from the field while grabbing 32 rebounds and making 15 steals.
Individually, Aubrey Olander led Little River with 20 points while both Lily Boughfman and MeKenzie Renken also reached double digits with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Nine Lady Redskins put at least a pair of points in the scorebook.
Raelynn Welsh led the work on the boards for the Lady Redskins by pulling down seven rebounds with Olander and Renken both grabbing six. The Boughfman sisters, Lily and Elsie did a solid job of passing the ball from the paint to their teammates and topped the Lady Redskins in assists with four each.
The Lady Eagles only had four girls score with Lili Espinoza leading the way with five.
With the loss the Canton/Galva Lady Eagles fall to 2-13 for the season as they prep for games next week with Solomon at home on Monday and at Rural Vista on Friday.
The Little River Lady Redskins are now a sparkling 14-1 for the 2021-22 season and will go on the road Tuesday to Centre before hosting Elyria Christian on Friday.
