MOUNDRIDGE – Despite a slight stumble in the second quarter, the Moundridge boys used consistency in their play on Tuesday to score a 16-point, 63-47 home court win over Hutchinson Trinity.
With the win, the Wildcats move their season mark to 13-3 as they get ready to tangle with Remington on the road Friday.
After taking a five-point, 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats allowed Trinity to crawl back to within one-point, 25-24, at the halftime break before putting 38 points on the scoreboard in the final two quarters in earning the final 16-point victory.
“I referred to this game as a ‘trap game’ as I knew the 1-14 Celtics were better than their record and I was right,” said Wildcat head coach Vance Unrau after the game. “We were finally able to extend to a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and then shoot free throws to close it out.”
The Wildcats dominated the boards, outrebounding Trinity 27-13 although Trinity did hit on 57% of the shots they did take from the field.
Only four Wildcats scored in the game as Landon Kaufman, Logan Churchill and Barrett Moddelmog combined for 56 of the team’s 63 points with Kaufman scoring 22, Churchill getting 21 and Moddelmog chipping in with 13. Both Churchill and Moddelmog made three three-pointers while Joseph Schrag topped the work in the paint with 11 rebounds. Churchill also grabbed eight rebounds while blocking a pair of Trinity shots.
Coach Unrau concluded his reflections on the game by adding, “Joseph Schrag at just five-foot-ten was such a highlight on the boards, proving that you don’t have to be big to rebound. It takes desire and effort to go after the ball. Such an inspiration tonight. We continue to share the ball and knock down the open looks.”
