CANTON – The Canton/Galva boys and girls closed out their 2021-22 regular season basketball schedules on Tuesday with a pair of losses to Goessel as the boys lost by 12 and the girls lost by 18.
With the loss the Eagle boys close out the season with a record of 9-9 as they now prep to go on the road and battle St. John on Thursday in sub-state action while the Lady Eagles finish a tough season with a record of just 3-17 as they also prep to play St. John in their first round of sub-state on Thursday.
Game summaries:
SLUGGISH FIRST HALF COSTS EAGLE BOYS
A sluggish first half cost the Eagle boys as they trailed 16-7 at the end of the first quarter and still could not get the offense going in the second quarter and found themselves down by 15, 28-13 at the halftime break.
While Canton/Galva did come out with more offense in the second half, they still could get many points chipped off the Goessel lead in eventually losing by 12, 59-47.
“Not sure why but we came out really flat tonight,” explained Eagle head coach Larry O’Connor in his post-game reflections. “Not going to win many ball games putting up just 13 points in a half. But we were still in the ball game at the half. Second half came out with a lot more energy and hit some shots. Had our chances but could not make enough plays. I was happy with our second half as we outscored them, but we need to be able to put four quarters together and we have been struggling to do that.”
Nine Eagles put points on the scoreboard in the game with Jayden Ediger leading the way with nine while both Wyatt Collins and Christian Darrah finished with eight.

LADY EAGLES BALL HANDLING COSTS THEM
When you turn the ball over 30 times it is tough to win games and that is what happened on Tuesday in the Lady Eagles regular season finale as they gave up the ball 30 times while also committing 18 personal fouls in their 45-27 loss to Goessel.
The Lady Eagles fell behind 12-3 by the end of the first quarter and were still down by 15 at 28-13 at the halftime break. They did manage to chisel a couple of points off the deficit in the final two quarters before losing by 12.
With the struggles in turnovers and personal fouls, the Lady Eagles lost their edge on the boards where they out rebounded Goessel 33-27 led by the Craig sisters with Red pulling down 12 rebounds and Mimi grabbing 10.
Mimi Craig recorded a double-double in the game as she also led the team in scoring with 13 points.
