HAVEN – It was a solid day on Tuesday for the Canton/Galva track/field teams as they traveled to Haven and recorded 12 gold medals as the Eagle boys took second and the Lady Eagles finished fourth.

The Lady Eagles only had two girls participating, but they managed to rack up 44 points which was good for fourth in the six-team field. Hutchinson Central Christian, Haven, and Elyria Christian all finished ahead of Canton/Galva.

Junior Lady Eagle Mimi Craig won both the shot put and discus with season best throws in both events while Brinley Becker, just a sophomore, won the long jump and finished second in the 200 meters and third in the 100 meters.

A lack of overall depth hindered the Eagle boys as they finished second with 123 points, well behind Hutchinson Central Christian who scored 158, despite Canton/Galva winning nine events.

Three Eagles, seniors Tyson Struber and Christian Darrah along with sophomore Lane McMannis all scored wins in their individual events plus running with Tanner Koehn to win the 4×400 meter relay.

McMannis and Struber both won three individual golds with McMannis winning both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles plus the 400 meters while Struber took first in the javelin, as well as the 100 and 200 meters. Darrah earned his pair of individual gold in the 800- and 3,200-meter runs.

“With some strong wind gusts and a fast-paced meet some of the athletes had events very close to another with some being back-to-back,” noted Eagle head coach Tina McMannis. “We didn’t have as many personal records due to those factors, but the short recovery times let the athletes work on endurance and perseverance.”

Next up for the Eagle track/field teams will be on Tuesday, April 26 when they travel to Douglass.

Coach McMannis concluded her post-meet reflections by saying, “We are building our strength and looking forward to the last few weeks leading up to the end of our season.”
