WICHITA – The Moundridge boys track/field team scored a state championship on Saturday when they out pointed Garden Plain and Inman for the Class 2A state title.

Scoring 58 points, the Wildcats finished just a pair of points ahead of second-place Garden Plain with 56 and five points ahead of the county rival Teutons who had 53. Berean Academy with 40.5 and Kansas City Christian with 37 rounded out the top five in the team standings.

For the girls, the Lady Teutons scored 15 points to place 17th in the team standings while the Lady Wildcats finished 38th with just a pair of points.

While they only had Wildcats in six events, Moundridge recorded three golds and three silver medals at the meet with Kaden Elmore leading the way with a first-place finish in the 400 meters while taking second in both the 100 and 200 meters. Elmore also ran a leg on state champion 4×100 meter relay team that broke a state record during the preliminaries. Elmore had a hand in 36 of the teams 58 points.

Joining Elmore in winning the 4×100 meter relay was Garrett Doherty, Landon Kaufman, and MacKaleb Unruh. Unruh also placed fifth in the 100 meters.

Running legs on the state champion Wildcat 4×400 meter relay team were Kaufman, Logan Churchill, Caleb Samland, and Unruh. Churchill, Unruh, Kaufman, and Samland teamed up to finish second in the 4×800 meter relay.

For the Lady Wildcats, Avery Schrag finished seventh in the 400 meters.

Placing third in the team standings was county rival Inman as the Teutons rolled up 53 points as they scored team points in nine events.

Harrison Brunk recorded the lone gold medal for the Teutons when he won the 200 meters while he finished third in the 100 meters. Tanner Heckel had the other top three individual finish for Inman when he finished second in the long jump.

The quartet of Heckel, Eli Brunk, Dawson Mannebach, and Harrison Brunk came up short in both the 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays, finishing second in both events to cross-county rival Moundridge.

Madilyn Heflin placed third and fourth in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles to score 11 of the Lady Teutons 15 points as they finished 17th overall.

4×400 Meter Relay: 1st – Wildcats, 3:28.23, 10 points, (Landon Kaufman, Logan Churchill, Caleb Samland, MacKaleb Unruh).

4×800 Meter Relay: 2nd – Wildcats, 8:24.90, 8 points, (MacKaleb Unruh, Logan Churchill, Landon Kaufman, Caleb Samland).

Lady Wildcats:

Team – Finished 38th with 2 points.

200 Meters: 10th in Prelims – Avery Schrag, 27.61.

400 Meters: 7th – Avery Schrag, 1:03.71, 2 points.

Team – Finished 3rd with 53 points.

100 Meters: 3rd – Harrison Brunk, 10.81, 6 points.

110 Meter Hurdles: 6th – Eli Brunk, 16.03, 3 points.

200 Meters: 1st – Harrison Brunk, 22.74, 10 points.

300 Meter Hurdles: 5th – Eli Brunk, 43,17, 4 points.

400 Meters: 5th – Dawson Mannebach, 52.97, 4 points; Kendyn Blank – Did Not Run.

Boys Javelin: 7th – Grant Thimmesch, 155’10”, 2 points.

Boys Long Jump: 2nd – Tanner Heckel, 21’4”, 8 points.

Boys Triple Jump: 11th – Tanner Heckel, 41’7”.
