WINFIELD – Tuesday was rough day for the McPherson High volleyball team went on the road to Winfield and lost both ends of a triangular.
In their first matches with Andale, the Lady Bullpups were humbled in losing in straight sets, 14-25, 19-25.
“We played a tough Andale team with good effort and attitude,” said Lady Bullpup head coach Christy Doile. “We served better, only missing one serve, got some key blocks and key hits, unfortunately their offense was too much for us. (Addie) Herrera had a really good offensive game and placed her tips.”
In the second match with host Winfield, McPherson kept the scores close but fell short in straight sets, losing 23-25 and 22-25.
About the second match, Doile noted, “We were way too streaky against Winfield and struggled to get the momentum consistently. Winfield kept the ball in play more than we did and they started both sets off stronger than we did as well. At the end of the first set, we made a great comeback with Brooke (Doile) on the serve line, and we strung points together to get within 23-24 before their middle hitter connected to win the game. As for set two, when the score was in the high teens, we were up as many as three and then the error bug bit again. Winfield served it tough and really hustled.”
As for the top individuals for the day, Haely Hageman made 13 kills and recorded 13 digs while Alex Romero made 28 assists to lead the effort for the Lady Bullpups. Ava Romero pitched in with 15 digs as well.
Doile concluded her post-meet reflections by adding, “Haely (Hageman) improved her hitting this evening, building on the past weekend. It was nice to see her play better on the outside as we need that from her. Ava (Romero) was really good on defense and receive this evening. We will take this experience, learn and grow from it, that is the only option we have. We will do our very best to make sure the kids understand how to respond and get back on track.”
The Lady Bullpup spikers will look to rebound next Tuesday, September 6 when they play host to Winfield and Circle.
