CLEARWATER – On Thursday, the McPherson Middle School cross country team opened their 2022 season at the Clearwater Invitational and earned four medals in the process.
“Our team ran really well today,” noted head coach Matt McCasland. “Each runner improved their time considerably from our time trials last week.”
Leading the team was Eliza Jex running for the 7th grade girls division where she placed ninth.
According to coach McCasland, “Eliza ran a great race as she got out fast with the front group of girls. This was really important because her race had over 70 runners.”
For the 8th grade girls, the Junior Lady Pups had Molly Owen finishing 23rd.
Speaking of Molly, McCasland said, “Molly ran a smart race as well. She knows that she is not going to pick up places in the first 100 meters or the last 100 meters. She earned her medal by settling in at an above average pace and then being able to maintain it through to the finish.”
In the 8th grade boys competition, two Junior Pups medaled with Ben Bocox finishing 14th and Jonas Emery placing 16th.
Coach McCasland concluded his post-meet reflections by talking about the boys and adding, “Ben and Jonas were able to run together for the entire race. They were able to push each other, and both had a great first showing.”
Next up for the McPherson Middle School Junior Pup harriers will be a huge Invitational at Prairie Hills in Buhler on Tuesday, September 6.
