GREAT BEND – The McPherson High ninth-grade football team made it a clean sweep over Great Bend on Monday as they went on the road and scored a 48-28 victory over the Panthers.

Aaron Winters put the freshman Bullpups on the board early when he ran the opening kickoff back 95 yards for a touchdown followed by catching a pass from Kyser Kanitz for the two-point conversion, giving McPherson an early 8-0 lead.

Kanitz and Winter connected later in the quarter for a 15-yard touchdown though the two-point conversion failed. After Great Bend scored late in the quarter the freshman Bullpups finished the quarter up 14-8.

The two teams traded scores in the second quarter with McPherson scoring off a 65-yard run by Kanitz while the Panthers hit for an 80-yard scoring pass play, leaving McPherson with a 20-14 advantage going into the halftime break.

Scoring twice in the third quarter off 5- and 30-yard scoring runs by Cooper Reeves plus a two-point conversion pass from Kanitz to Cade Strathman, McPherson entered the final 12 minute of play holding a 34-22 lead after the Panthers made another score.

It was the Julian Glover show in the fourth quarter as he scored twice on runs of two and 55 yards. Great Bend added another long, 50-yard, scoring pass play but it was not enough as the freshman Bullpups held on for the final 20-point, 48-28 win.

The freshman Bullpups will not be back on the competitive field again until Monday, September 19 when they travel to Junction City.
