LINDSBORG – On Thursday the Smoky Valley girls tennis program hosted their own Invitational and scored a team championship as well as an individual champion in the doubles competition.
The Lady Vikings rolled up 50 team points to win the tournament by 11 points over Central Plains and Hesston who tied for second with 39. Ellsworth rounded out the top four with 30 while Chapman, Abilene, Hillsboro and Hutchinson Trinity Catholic were the other team competing.
“I thought our girls played extremely well,” noted Lady Viking head coach Vince Warbinton. “With the open tournament format, this was the first tournament in the season that both our #1 and #2’s played in the same brackets.”
In the doubles competition, the senior duo of Campbell Gaskill and Karee Adam went 4-0 for the day to score a first-place gold while the tandem of Kayla Norberg and Lily Heline finished fourth.
Smoky Valley had three girls in the singles competition where senior Lena Rauchholz went 3-1 to finish third while Kelsee Adam finished 1-3 for the day and placed eighth while the team’s extra entry, Madelyn Mauk finished 1-2 to place 13th.
Coach Warbinton concluded his look at the tournament by saying, “While we were led by our seniors, Lena (Rauchholz) in singles and the tandem of Campbell (Gaskill) and Karee (Adam) in doubles, I was very pleased with how Kelsee (Adam) in singles and the duo of Kayla (Norberg) and Lily (Heline) in doubles performed today. We would not have won the tournament without their stellar play.”
The Lady Viking tennis team has no time for rest as they turn around and get back on the courts on Saturday at the Hesston Invitational.
