MCPHERSON – It was a rough day on Thursday for the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade football team as they host Derby at the field on Grant Complex and lost 26-6.

Most of the damage was done in the first two and one-half quarters as the Junior Pups kept Derby out of the end zone in the final two quarters.

“I was most pleased with the fact we shut them out in the second half,” said eighth-grade head coach Heath Gerstner. “We rally battled and compete. Derby was very fast and physical and just loved the toughness we are developing, and I think our best football is ahead of us.”

The Junior Pups finally put points on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when Carter Bengtson connected on a 20-yard pass play to Adrian Unruh who fumbled the ball near the end zone, and it was then recovered by Dane Becker for the touchdown.

Coach Gerstner concluded his post-game thoughts by adding, “I absolutely love each and every one of these boys and was very disappointed Derby could not play a fifth quarter.”

The Middle School eighth-grade football team will be back at Grant Complex next Thursday to play host to Salina South Middle School.
