MCPHERSON – In home matches on Thursday with Derby North and Goddard Eisenhower, the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade volleyball teams both split matches and went 1-1 for the day.
‘A’ Team Results: For the Junior Lady Pups seventh grade ‘A’ team, they got the day off with a straight set take down of Goddard Eisenhower, winning 25-21, 25-15 before dropping both sets in a match with Derby North, losing 22-25, 17-25.
The split put the ‘A’ team seventh graders at 4-2 for the season.
“We had several positives in the match against Goddard Eisenhower,” said head coach Shelley Bohme. “The girls did a phenomenal job of covering and making good passes on defense which allowed us to set the ball up. There were some great hustle plays and saves from our back row as well.
Bohme concluded her brief post-match reflections by noting, “We seemed to lack energy against Derby North and had too many missed serves and other unforced errors. We were never able to get into a rhythm.”
“B” Team Results: The seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ team had the same results with a split of matches, they just did opposite teams as they lost in lengthy three-set match with Goddard Eisenhower after winning the first set 25-20 but losing the final two sets 23-25, 8-15.
With the match against Derby North, the ‘B’ team bounced back and won the first set 25-23, lost the middle set 16-25, and then scored a 15-7 win in set three to get the match victory to keep the ‘B’ teams season record even at 3-3.
“The girls put up a great fight with taking both games to three sets,” explained ‘B’ team coach Katherine Cooper. “Several of our players had strong serving streaks allowing us to gain a lot of points. Throughout the night, the girls were able to get the ball set up for some good hits and tips. They worked well as a team and maintained a positive attitude even when we lost. They know what they need to improve on.”
The seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups now prep for another home triangular on Monday, September 12 when they host both Newton Chisholm and Salina Lakewood.
The coaches wanted to remind everyone that the Middle School volleyball teams will be hosting a “Bullpups Dig Red” fundraiser to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society next week. These will happen on Monday, September 12 at the seventh-grade teams home matches and again on Tuesday, September 13 when the eighth-grade teams will be at home.
Coaches and players encourage all the fans to come out in support of the fundraiser wearing red and be willing to donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
