DERBY – The McPherson Middle School eighth-grade volleyball team went on the road again Thursday to Derby and scored a pair of wins for the ‘A’ team over Derby North and Goddard Eisenhower, bringing their season mark to 6-0.

“A” Team Results: For the Junior Lady Pups eighth-grade ‘A’ team they recorded consecutive straight set wins, first by taking down host Derby North 25-17, 25-16, before sweeping Goddard Eisenhower 25-21, 25-11.

“We started a little sluggish today but gained momentum through the matches,” pointed out head coach Christine Pianalto.

Coach Pianalto had rave reviews for several players including both Kynedi Huggard and Brynn Littlejohn who she said both served lights out while the team also got strong passing and hustle from Piper Alvord and Pera Bauer. The combination of those four helped the ‘A’ team put together some long runs while serving.

Pianalto concluded her reflections on the days matches by adding, “I also must mention how Rylie Whitfield was all over the court, consistently setting up her hitters for success. Both Jaela Thompson and Carmin Pavlovich played well at the net and recorded multiple kills and blocks.”

‘B’ Team Results: The road trip did not go as well for the eighth-grade Junior Lady Pups team as they struggled and lost both of their matches in straight sets and by wide margins.

Against host Derby North, the ‘B’ team lost 10-25, 14-25 before being humbled by Goddard Eisenhower in straight sets as well, losing 6-25, 7-25.

‘B’ team coach Tami Malm explained, “Our team moved their feet and talked to each other well in their first match with Derby North and while we served better in the second match versus Goddard Eisenhower, they also brough strong serving and our girls wer not able to serve-receive as well.”

The ‘B’ team now drops to 2-4 for the season.

The Junior Lady Pups eighth-grade teams will be back on the road on Monday, September 12 when they travel to Newton to tangle with Newton Chisholm and Salina Lakewood.

The coaches wanted to remind everyone that the Middle School volleyball teams will be hosting a “Bullpups Dig Red” fundraiser to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society next week. These will happen on Monday, September 12 at the seventh-grade teams home matches and again on Tuesday, September 13 when the eighth-grade teams will be at home.

Coaches and players encourage all the fans to come out in support of the fundraiser wearing red and be willing to donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
