MCPHERSON – The McPherson Middle School seventh-grade football team remained unbeaten at 3-0 as they continued to dominate on the field Thursday playing host to Salina South and scoring a 50-0 shutout victory.
“The defense had another impressive game as they didn’t allow a score,” pointed out head coach Dustan Kanitz. “They created several turnovers that set up good starting field position on multiple drives.”
Leading the seventh-grade Junior Pup defense was Carter Melton who recorded nine tackles and an interception. Tre Winburn and Colt Chapman were in on five and four tackles, respectively, while Isaac Nelson also had an interception and Graham Prescott recovered a fumble.
Offensively, the team rolled up 393 yards that included 323 gained by running the ball and 67 yards coming through the air.
Tre Winburn found the end zone four times on runs of seven, fifty, two, and thirty-five yards while Jaxon Hoover scored on a 20-yard scamper and Graham Prescott finished out the scoring with a 24-yard run. Hoover connected with Colt Chapman on a 30-yard pass for the other score in the game.
Coach Kanitz concluded his post-game reflections by talking about the offense and saying, “Our offensive line really stepped up to the challenge of playing against a big physical Salina South team today. I thought Eli Corcoran, Carter Melton, Colt Harlin, Carter Leathers, McCoy Bergerran, Isaac Cahoone, Ryker Bascue, Holtyn Hamlin and Kaleb Postier were key in our accumulation of 323 rushing yards as a team.”
Next up will be the seventh-grade Junior Pups first road trip of the season on Thursday, September 22 when they travel to Andover.
