EMPORIA – On Tuesday the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade volleyball teams traveled to Emporia for a pair of matches with Emporia and Salina South.
“A” Team Results: In the ‘A’ team matches, the Junior Lady Pups scored a pair of wins with the Salina South being a tough, hard fight before McPherson prevailed 28-26, 25-17 and then coming back and blowing past host Emporia in straight sets, winning 25-11, 25-7.
The wins boast the season record for the ‘A’ team to 8-2.
“After a first set against Salina South that was closer than it should have been, we settled in and had a fun night of volleyball,” said head coach Shelley Bohme. “The girls did a great at the job of helping set each other up and making saves to keep the ball in play. We continue to get better at tipping and putting up blocks. We need to continue to work on consistent serving and making good decisions, but this group is improving every game.”
“B” Team Results: The seventh grade ‘B’ team also came home with a pair of victories as they handled Salina South 25-21, 25-22 for a win in a pair of close sets before taking a straight set win over host Emporia 25-10, 25-22.
The ‘B’ team is now 7-3 for the season as coach Katherine Cooper noted, “Our girls came ready to win. Against Salina South, the girls set the ball up and got several tips while their serves were hot with several girls getting aces. Afton Harrington and Adrienne Hueback both went on serving runs which got us points. Bailee Floyd did a great job at serve receiving.”
Cooper concluded her reflections by adding, “The game against Emporia was just as exciting. Jaylinn Major and Raegen Hancock had strong serves, while both McKenna Christiansen and Cal Whiteneck did a great job of playing up at the net. Kate Witte was quick on her feet in saving the ball in both games. Kaitlyn Nichols and Kaylee Lauderdale played great in their positions throughout the night. Taylen Wall had the winning serve to give us our seventh win of the season. The girls are becoming a stronger team as the season goes on.”
