SOLOMON – The Canton/Galva football remained unbeaten and for the second game in a row earned their victory by point rule at halftime as they went on the road Friday to Solomon and scored a 58-6 win.
Now 3-0 for the season and currently ranked number two in 8-Man Division II, Canton/Galva will be on the road again next Friday when they travel to Norwich. Norwich is 1-2 for the year and will be coming off a 68-18 win over Pretty Prairie last Friday.
For the Eagles, they put 38 points on the board in the first quarter much thanks to three pass interception returns for touchdowns by Jett Vincent while Garrett Maltbie finally returned from an injury and made a huge season debut by throwing for two scores. Maltbie connected with Cason Mastre on a 46-yard pass play for the Eagles first score and then connected with Wyatt Collins on a 30-yard score late in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Lane McMannis rambled into the end zone from 24 yards for the Eagles sixth score of the game before Maltbie connected with Vincent and Mastre for the team’s final two scores.
For the game, Canton/Galva only needed 205 yards in offense on just 16 plays to earn the victory while the Eagle defense held Solomon to just 59 yards in offense on 34 plays, including a minute 2 yards rushing on 22 attempts.
Maltbie finished his return to quarterback by connecting on six of nine throws for 157 yards while Lane McMannis led the Eagles in rushing with 30 yards on just four carries. Cason Mastre totaled 80 yards receiving on his two receptions, both going for scores.
Defensively, the Eagles recorded three quarterback sacks and nine tackles that went for a loss of yardage, led by Nick Evans with seven total tackles and Wyatt Collins with five. Collins led the team with 3.5 tackles for a loss of yardage.
