ELYRIA – It has been a rough week for the Elyria Christian volleyball team as they suffered three losses to just one victory.
Despite the rough week, Ryland Hawkinson continues to have a spectacular senior season as she is currently ranked fifth in the state of all classes for blocks with 62, which also puts her as number one in both Class 1A Division II and the Wheat State League as well. Hawkinson also ranks number one in the league for kills as well with 111.
On Thursday, September 15 the Lady Eagles hosted Bluestem and Berean Academy and unfortunately lost both matches.
Elyria took Bluestem to three sets before losing with the first two sets decided by a total of just four points. After the Lady Eagles scored a tight 25-23 win in set one, Bluestem came back and took a 25-27 win in the second set before pulling away in set three, winning 14-25 to earn the match victory.
Ryland Hawkinson led the Lady Eagles against Bluestem with nine kills while Kortney Potter dished out nine assists and made 10 digs.
Berean Academy overpowered Elyria in the second match of the evening, winning both 11-25, 13-25.
On Tuesday, September 20, Elyria traveled to Canton for a quad with Solomon, Little River and Canton/Galva. The Lady Eagles overcame a first set loss to score a three-set win (18-25, 26-24, 25-17) over host Canton/Galva to begin the evening, Ryland Hawkinson led the team by recording 14 kills while Laney Reiff made 19 digs and Alexus Swenson made 15.
In the nightcap match, Elyria lost in straight sets to Solomon, 17-25, and 19-25.
The Lady Eagles were scheduled to host Burrton and Canton/Galva on Thursday, September 22 before Wakefield and Rural Vista come to battle on Tuesday, September 27.
