CANTON – Canton/Galva spotted visiting St. John’s/Tipton a 6-0 lead before kicking in the offensive engines and taking care of business at home on Friday with a final 58-12 victory.
With the win the Eagles stay unbeaten at 7-0 for the season as they prep to close out the regular season part of their 2022 schedule next Friday by hosting Rural Vista who is 2-5 for the season after losing 54-12 to Central Christian on Friday.
St. John’s took a 6-0 lead on a one-yard scoring run shortly after the seven-minute mark of the first quarter after which Canton/Galva responded with a Lane McMannis 51-yard run for a score to make the game 6-6 at the end of the first 12 minutes of play.
The offensive machine kicked into high gear in the second quarter as the Eagles put 40 points on the board with Garrett Maltbie scoring three times on runs of five, forty-four, and fifteen yards while also throwing scoring passes of 23 yards to Lane McMannis and 17 yards to Cason Mastre. With St. John’s sneaking a second score in during the final third of the quarter, the Eagles took a commanding 46-12 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Maltbie throw another scoring pass, a second one to Cason Mastre of 34 yards before diving into the end zone from a yard out to close out the game at 58-12 with another win by the 8-Man 45-point rule.
Overall, the Eagles rolled up 495 yards in offense on 47 plays with 219 coming from the passing attack and 276 from running the ball as they ran a balanced attack by passing 26 times to running the ball 21 times.
Maltbie finished out the game completing 15-of-26 for 219 yards and the three scores while running for another 77 yards on seven carries and four more scores. Leading the Eagles in rushing was Jett Vincent who carried the ball just nine times but ran for 119 yards while Lane McMannis covered 78 yards on just four totes.
Cason Mastre was Maltbie’s favorite target, catching six balls for 93 yards while TJ Koehn had three catches for 56 yards and Vincent caught five passes for 47.
Defensively, the Eagles held St. John’s/Tipton to just eight first downs and 115 yards in offense on 39 plays. Lane McMannis collected 10 tackles with five of those being solo while Jett Vincent recorded eight tackles of which six were solo stops plus he upped his state career record of interceptions to 33 by picking off a pass. Both Nick Evans and Preston Minson had six tackles with Minson getting credit for a quarterback sack.
