CANTON – Canton/Galva claimed their Regional Championship in the 8-Man, Division II state playoffs on Friday when the number two ranked Eagles scored a convincing 62-8 win at home over Hanover.
With the victory, the Eagles are now 10-0 for the season as they enter the state quarterfinals next Friday playing host to number nine ranked Lebo. Lebo will bring an 8-2 record into the game after shutting out Frankfort 46-0 for their regional championship on Friday.
The Eagles put five scores on the scoreboard in the first quarter as Garrett Maltbie ran for touchdowns from 38 and two yards out while passing for a third score with an 18-yard completion to Cason Mastre. Ryder Norstrom dove in for another score from two yards and Lane McMannis closed out the first quarter scoring explosion by breaking loose on a touchdown run covering 56 yards, giving Canton/Galva a commanding 34-0 lead.
In the second quarter, McMannis began the scoring with a pair of touchdowns from four and nine yards out upping the Eagle lead to 48-0. After Hanover scored on a 13-yard run, Maltbie lead Canton/Galva on a pair of long offensive drives before putting two more scores on his stat sheet from four and two yards giving the Eagles their final convincing 62-8 victory.
Offensively, the Eagles rolled up 351 yards on 34 plays that included a whopping 294 yards rushing the ball on 27 carries as they dominated the time clock by having the ball for nearly 24 minutes while the offense for Hanover only found time on the field for just barely 12 minutes.
Garrett Maltbie totaled 149 yards in offense with 10 runs for 92 yards while completing four-of-seven passes for another 57 yards. Lane McMannis led the Eagles in rushing with 107 yards on just seven totes while Ryder Norstrom ran the ball seven times for 87.
On defense, Canton/Galva held Hanover to just five first downs and 49 yards of offense on 31 snaps. Hanover only managed 11 yards on 10 rushes.
Leading the defense was TJ Koehn who had huge game with seven tackles of which six were solo stops while also recording a quarterback sack, a pair of tackles for a loss of yardage and picking off a pass.
