CANTON – A slow start hindered the Canton/Galva girls basketball team on Friday at home in their 2022-23 season opener which they lost by 10 to Rural Vista, 42-32.
While no team scoring was available for Rural Vista, the Lady Eagles only scored five points in the first quarter and eight in both the second and third quarters before hitting for eleven in the fourth quarter in the loss.
“We played extremely hard and showed great effort,” noted first-year Lady Eagle head coach Brad Willems. “A lot to be happy with, but we have some things to work on.”
Adi Alcala, just a freshman, and senior Mimi Craig led the Lady Eagles in scoring with eight points each while another freshman, Trinity Espinoza scored seven and senior Lili Espinoza chipped in with six.
Coach Willems concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “We have definitely got to rebound better, rotate quicker on defense, play as aggressive as we did only without the fouls, and we need to continue to work on our shooting.”
Next up for the Lady Eagles will be the Goessel Bluebird Classic Tournament where they are scheduled to play Central Christian on Monday and Goessel on Tuesday in their first two games.
