GOESSEL – After placing second for the previous two seasons, the Little River girls finally gained the trophy as champions of the Goessel Bluebird Classic on Saturday with a six-point, 51-45 victory over Central Christian.
The win leaves the top-ranked Lady Redskins with an unblemished 4-0 mark for the season as they now prep to play host to Moundridge on Tuesday.
“It was not an easy task as we battled a very good Central Christian team but after coming in second two years in a row, we finally captured the Goessel Bluebird Classic Championship,” exclaimed Lady Redskin head coach Brent Clark.
Little River took an early three-point, 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and had a slim two-point, 29-27 advantage when the two teams headed to the halftime break.
The Lady Redskins pulled away a bit in the third quarter by outscoring Central Christian 12-5 to hold a 41-32 lead heading into the final stanza where they held off a rally to earn the final six-point, 51-45 win and championship trophy.
Coach Clark finished off his thoughts of the game by saying, “It is good that we have a deep bench, because we were in serious foul trouble all night. Thanks to some very talented freshman we were able to pull out the victory.”
Committing 28 personal fouls in the game, the Lady Redskins finished the game with three key players on the bench including Havana Olander, Alaina Eck and Ashley Stephenson due to fouling out while both Aubrey Olander and Adelynne Strecker each finished the game with four fouls.
Despite playing with four fouls, Aubrey Olander still managed to lead the team with a double-double in scoring the team high 15 points to go with grabbing 10 rebounds. Evie Look also reached double digits with 13 points while Alaina Eck had seven.
