            LINDSBORG – On Friday, the Smoky Valley girls used a huge first quarter to propel them to a 20-point, 47-27 win over visiting Concordia.

            The Lady Viking smothered the Lady Panthers in the first quarter and ran out to a 14-point, 17-3 lead and then hung on to have a 15-point, 26-11 lead going into the halftime break.

            After Concordia played Smoky Valley even up in the third quarter, the Lady Vikings put an extra five points on the lead in the fourth to earn the final 20-point victory.

            Looking at the stats, the game was determined by the Lady Vikings scoring four three-pointers to the Lady Panthers zero and scoring eight more points than the visitors at the free  throw line. Smoky Valley’s defense forced Concordia in making 29 turnovers as well.

            Most of the scoring for Smoky Valley came from three players as Katja Blanchat led the team with 19 points and both Adrian Hazelwood and Tinley Scott each chipped in with 13 and 11 points each.

            Blanchat, Clara McElroy, and Scott each grabbed seven rebounds while Scott and Breanne Peters each made four steals.

            Now 2-1 on the young season, the Lady Vikings will return to the competitive hardwood on the road Tuesday at Hesston.
