SEDGWICK – Playing shorthanded and then having a cold night shooting was the combination playing out Tuesday for the Elyria Christian boys as they traveled to Sedgwick and fell short late in the game, losing 30-24.
With the loss the Eagles fall top 3-2 for the young season as they prep to play host on Friday to Solomon.
“We knew it would be tough going in shorthanded,” pointed out Eagle head coach Zach Goodrich. “The Heart of America League has quality coaches and teams, and you learn a little bit about your team when you play one of them. On the road at Sedgwick was no different, but I am proud of the way the boys responded.”
Two things on the stat sheet that told the tale of the game, Elyria shot just 28% from the field and since they committed 20 fouls to Sedgwick only having eight, Sedgwick attempted 17 more free throws and made 14 compared to the Eagles only making a pair from the charity stripe.
Elyria had control of the game in the first half as they lead by two at 8-6 at the end of the first quarter and held a three-point, 16-13 advantage at the halftime break before going ice cold in the second half while Sedgwick got within one in the third after the Eagle’s Ty Romero got dinged up and left the game, and then pulled away in the fourth.
Ty Romero hit on three three-pointers in leading the team in scoring with 11 points while James Schott did much of the work in the paint by pulling down five rebounds though Romero and Landon Schneider each grabbed four as well.
Coach Goodrich finished his thoughts on the game by saying, “We were able to go into halftime with a three-point lead and came out in the third quarter with a few stops. Ty (Romero) took a pretty hard foul that sidelined him the rest of the game and we were not able to get enough points to come away with a road win. We did give ourselves a chance, and that is all I can ask of the boys that stepped in tonight. There is an opportunity for us here to improve the last two games before the break and get other guys going offensively.”
