LOST SPRINGS – Despite playing without two key players, the Canton/Galva boys went on the road Friday and put on an offensive explosion in routing Centre by 38 points, 72-34.
With the win the Eagles are now 5-2 for the season as they now get ready for the holiday break with just one more game on Tuesday when they host Wakefield.
“We came out ready to play,” noted Eagle head coach Larry O’Connor. “Our team depth was a big factor tonight. We were still down some players due to injury and played without Jett Vincent who was on his official visit to Colorado State University for football.”
After the Eagles ran out to a seven-point, 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, the offense caught fire and poured 27 points into the scorebook in the second quarter to take a commanding 27-point, 43-16 advantage into the halftime break.
Canton/Galva stayed red hot coming out of the break as they put another 26 points on the scoreboard in the third stanza while holding Centre to under 10. Centre did get the best of the scoring in the fourth, but it was much too late as the Eagles cruised in for the final 38-point victory.
Jase Beltz led the Eagles in scoring with 21 points thanks to connecting on five three-pointers while Garrett Maltbie put 17 points by his name in the scorebook and Preston Minson just missed double digits with eight. Ten different Eagle players put points in the scorebook by the end of the game.
Coach O’Connor concluded his post=game comments by saying, “We are starting to get our basketball legs and did a lot of good basketball things tonight. All 12 players played a lot throughout the game. They are starting to figure out their roles and what they need to do and improve on to make us successful.”
