MOUNDRIDGE – The Moundridge girls finished the pre-holiday break with five straight losses, returning from the holiday break they scored a decisive 44-11 win at home over Oxford to begin the 2023 side of the season.
The win broke a five-game losing streak before the holiday break as the Lady Wildcats are now 2-5 for the season as they go on the road Friday to Marion.
It was the Lady Wildcat defense that was the star of the game as they shutout Oxford in the first quarter, taking an early 6-0 lead before powering out to a 27-5 advantage at the halftime break. After extending the lead to 38-11 after three quarters, the Moundridge girls once again shutout Oxford in the final quarter to gain the final 33-point victory.
“It was great to see the girls back on the court tonight,” noted Lady Wildcat head coach Kaleigh Huxman. “They worked really hard over the break and were eager to play another game. We had to knock off some rust in the first quarter, but really picked it up in the second.”
Kindall Elmore led the Lady Wildcats in the scoring with 16 points while Cammi Unruh hit for eight.
Coach Huxman concluded her post-game reflections by adding, “We let Oxford go to the free throw line too many times in the first half, so I challenged my girls to keep limiting those opportunities in the second half and be relentless on defense. I am proud of the way the girls responded to that challenge.”
