SOLOMON – The Canton/Galva girls went on the road Tuesday and not only did they double the number of wins from the previous season, they did so by hammering Solomon for a 20-point, 49-29 win.
With the victory the Lady Eagles are now 6-5 for the season which is double the number of wins from the 2021-22 season which was just three. Canton/Galva will be back at home on Friday to host Goessel.
Defense was the word in the first quarter as the Lady Eagles held Solomon to zero points while scoring 12. Putting another 13 on the board in the second quarter, Canton/Galva extended their lead to 16 at 25-9 as the teams headed to the halftime break.
The Lady Eagles pushed the advantage out to 24, 40-16 by the end of the third quarter before Solomon was able to chip a few points off their deficit, leaving Canton/Galva with the final 20-point victory.
“We came out really good defensively,” said Lady Eagle head coach Brad Willems. “Our effort was really good again tonight, but I think we might have been a little tired because we didn’t shoot as well as Monday night. Defensively we played hard but we bailed them out sometimes by fouling instead of just locking down and playing good defense. Offensively, we continue to get good shots but need to continue working on our shooting. Need to keep getting better every day.”
Trinity Espinoza led the Lady Eagle sin scoring with 14 while Brecken Pearson joined her in double digits with 12. Pearson also dished out five assists while Lili Espinoza and Mimi Craig led Canton/Galva in rebounding with seven and six respectively. The Espinoza sisters, freshman Trinity and senior Lili had the quick hands-on defense as they both made seven steals on the night.
