CANTON – Hosting a team that is short on numbers, the Canton/Galva put the hammer on visiting Peabody/Burns to the tune of a 65-point pummeling, winning 85-20.
The win puts the Eagles at 11-5 for the season as they enter the final couple of weeks of the regular season next week with a home battle against Little River on Tuesday followed by a road trip to Rural Vista on Friday.
“We played tonight against a team that was battling some team issues and were very short on numbers,” explained Eagle head coach Larry O’Connor. “Our guys came out focused and very aggressive.”
Focused and aggressive worked as the Eagles flew out to a 27-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and repeated the offensive output in the second quarter to give them a commanding 50-point, 54-4 advantage at the halftime break. Another 29 points in the third quarter put the game away as the Eagles cruised in for the final 65-point victory.
All 12 players that suited up for Canton/Galva put points by their name in the scorebook led by Jett Vincent who put 24 points on the board while Wyatt Collins hit for 12 and Lane McMannis proved he was getting back in form after fighting injuries as he also reached double digits with 10. Both Leyton Witte and Garrett Maltbie came close to double digits with each scoring eight. As a team the Eagles connected on seven three-pointers led by Maltbie and Jase Beltz both getting two each.
Coach O’Connor concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “Tonight, we focused on the little things and overall fundamentals as we have Little River coming to town on Tuesday. Tonight was also homecoming so I was very happy with the focus of the guys just coming and getting the job done.”
