LITTLE RIVER – In their first game of the Class 1A Division I sub-state tournament, the Little River boys pounded visiting St. John/Hudson on Friday to the tune of a 36-point, 57-21 win.
Now 15-5 on the season and seeded second in the sub-state, the Redskins will play third seed Pratt/Skyline (14-6) next Friday, March 3 in the semi-finals. The other sub-state semi-final will be a battle between top seed Macksville (17-2) and fourth seed Central Plains (9-11).
“I was proud of the way our guys defended tonight,” pointed out Little River head coach Erik Base. “We did a great job of talking and understanding different defensive positioning. Still a few things that we need to improve on going into next week. We will continue to work and learn through film.”
After Little River jumped out to a five-point, 12-7 lead by the end of the first quarter, the Redskins extended the advantage to 17 at 26-9 by the halftime break. Outscoring St. John/Hudson 31-12 in the final two quarters the Redskins cruised in for the final 36-point victory.
Braxton Lafferty led the Redskins in both scoring with 18 points and rebounds by grabbing seven while Logan Renken connected on three of the team’s eight three-pointers to help him reach double figures with 15. Rylan Konen did some yeoman work in the paint by pulling down six rebounds and Dalton Mantz tied Lafferty in steals with six while dishing out a team high five assists.
As a team the Redskins shared the ball well, passing out 13 assists on 23 made field goals though 11 personal fouls and 11 turnovers may be something to work on before the sub-state semi-finals.
Coach Base finished out his post-game reflections by adding, “Once we got off of the perimeter and settled down against what St. John/Hudson was doing defensively, we did a good job on the offensive end. Extremely excited for our opportunity next week as Pratt/Skyline is a well-coached team, and they are going to come in Friday and play extremely hard. Best part about the win tonight is we get to enjoy more time together. This is a great group of kids and they are fun to work with.”
